Danny Gokey's debut album "My Best Days" dropped at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 U.S. album sales chart after selling 65,000 copies during its initial week of release, according to Nielsen Soundscan data for the week ending March 7.
The American Idol eighth-season third-place finisher also saw his debut open at No. 3 on the Country Album sales chart -- representing the best debut for a male country solo artist since Billy Ray Cyrus' "Some Gave All" moved 90,000 copies in June 1992, Billboard reported.
In addition, Gokey -- who signed a record deal with 19 Recordings/RCA Nashville last September -- moved 19,000 digital copies, which also set a new record for first-week digital sales by a new country artist.
Gokey's first-week album sales bested those of eighth-season fourth-place finisher Allison Iraheta, whose debut album "Just Like You" dropped at No. 35 on the Billboard 200 U.S. album sales chart in December after selling 32,000 copies during its initial week of release.
Runner-up Adam Lambert's debut album "For Your Entertainment" dropped at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 U.S. album sales chart after selling 198,000 copies during its initial week of release in November.
Winner Kris Allen's debut album dropped at No. 11 on the Billboard 200 after selling only 80,000 copies during its initial week of release -- representing the lowest debut sales ever for an Idol winner.
Gokey performed "Days" -- the title track from his debut album -- during last Thursday night's American Idol results show and is currently scheduled for a pair of performances this weekend on the WSM Grand Ole Opry.
