Neil Patrick Harris is working on a deal with CBS and the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences to suit up and serve as host for the Emmy Awards.
The deal to host the Emmys isn't sealed yet, but Variety reports that CBS and the Television Academy want to lock Harris in "as soon as possible."
The "How I Met Your Mother" star is carving out a nice side career as an awards host. He earned glowing reviews for his stint as host of the Tony Awards on CBS last month, and he also emceed the TV Land Awards earlier this year.
Having Harris front and center during the Emmy telecast on Sunday, Sept. 20 would be a nice piece of promotion for "How I Met Your Mother," which begins its fifth season the following night.
Harris has been an Emmy nominee the past two years for his work as the womanizing, Bro Code-writing, catchphrase-spouting Barney Stinson on "HIMYM." Nominations for this year's awards will be announced Thursday, July 16.

Neil Patrick Harris is now officially your host for the 61st annual Primetime Emmy Awards.
Word that Harris was in talks to host the Emmys surfaced earlier this month, and CBS -- which is airing the ceremony this year -- and the Television Academy have now completed a deal with the "How I Met Your Mother" star. Harris, who's also a two-time Emmy nominee for "HIMYM," was widely praised for his work as host of the Tony Awards on CBS in June.
"After having had such a hoot hosting the Tonys, I was thrilled to get the call about the Primetime Emmys," Harris says. "I'm looking forward to the challenge of the show -- adding my own voice to it, while honoring the nominees and the entire year in television. But which voice to choose? I'm torn between gangsta, foppish Brit and robot. Really proud of my robot. We'll see what happens on the night."
Emmy nominations will be announced Thursday (July 16). The awards are scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 20.
Actress Shannon Elizabeth is going "Nude" at Showtime.
The "American Pie" star and recent "Dancing with the Stars" contestant will host a late-night series called "Live Nude Comedy" on the pay-cable channel. It premieres at midnight Thursday.
The show will feature a mix of stand-up comedy, sketches and burlesque (which is presumably where the "nude" part comes in). Comics Ian Edwards and Sam Tripoli will be featured in the premiere episode; Andy Dick, Whitney Cummings, Tig Notaro and Mike Faverman will also be part of future episodes.
A&E filmed a pilot for a reality series featuring Michael Jackson's brothers -- and is now figuring out how to handle it in the wake of Jackson's death.
"The Jackson Family" was shot earlier this year to air in 2010, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It follows Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and Randy Jackson as they worked on a new album and planned a reunion tour; the plan was to air the pilot and see if ratings warranted additional episodes.
Production wrapped well before Michael Jackson's death, and the network is now trying to figure out how to incorporate that fact into the show.
"We have started discussing internally and with the family but have not yet decided what direction to take with the show," A&E says in a statement. "We are respecting the family's wishes right now, and at the appropriate time we will all decide what direction this program to take."
