Shawn Johnson and Mark Ballas win 'Dancing with the Stars' eighth season
By Reality TV World staff, 05/20/2009

After waiting five seasons for their second win, Dancing with the Stars' female celebrities are on a roll.

Olympic gold medalist gymnast Shawn Johnson and her partner Mark Ballas were crowned Dancing with the Stars' eighth-season ballroom champions during last night's live finale results show on ABC.

Johnson's victory makes her Dancing with the Stars' third-straight female champion and evens the series' overall male/female winner record at four victories each.

"This has been the most amazing experience ever. I've grown so much. Thank you so much," Johnson said after Dancing with the Stars host Tom Bergeron revealed she was the eighth-season celebrity champion based on the combination of the judges' score shares for the dancers' Monday and Tuesday night performances and the share of home viewer votes cast immediately after Monday night's broadcast.

Sex and the City actor Gilles Marini and his partner Cheryl Burke finished just behind Johnson and Ballas in second place.

"This is, in eight seasons, our closest ever finale," Bergeron said. "When we combined the judges' scores with your votes there was less than 1% difference -- less than 1% in share -- between the couples that came in first and second."

"I'm so happy for Shawn and Mark, you know they worked so hard. We love them so much," Marini said after Johnson's victory was announced. "I want to thank all the fans, I want to thank all the people who helped me. I want to thank my wife, I love you so much. Cheryl, you're one of the best things that has happened in my life, I love you."

Jilted The Bachelor winner Melissa Rycroft -- who joined the show as a last-minute injury replacement only days before its first performance show -- and her professional partner Tony Dovolani finished third.

"Never in a million years did I imagine I'd be here dancing with an Olympian and someone who has been in a blockbuster movie," Rycroft said. "My life, the past eleven weeks, has completely changed, and I thank all the viewers and voters for keeping us here this long because I don't think Tony and I have had a better time."

Last night's victory represents Ballas' second Dancing with the Stars win, tying him with both Burke and fellow professional dancer Julianne Hough. Ballas also won Dancing with the Stars' Spring 2008 edition with Olympic gold medalist figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi.

Johnson -- who at 17 years old, also became Dancing with the Stars youngest champion -- is the third Olympic athlete to win the ABC ballroom dancing competition. In addition to Yamaguchi's sixth-season win, two-time Olympic gold medalist speed skater Apolo Anton Ohno, Dancing with the Stars' previous youngest champion, also won the show's fourth season on his 25th birthday in May 2007.

Johnson and Ballas and Marini and Burke had finished tied for first place on the overall judges' leaderboard with 58 out of 60 points for the two dances they had each performed on Monday night's performance show.

Johnson and Ballas had received 28 out of 30 points for their cha cha and a perfect 30 out of 30 points for their freestyle performance while Marini and Burke had received a perfect 30 out of 30 points for their paso doble performance and 28 out of 30 points for their freestyle routine.

Rycroft and Dovolani had finished in third place on Monday night's judges' leaderboard with 56 out of 30 points after receiving 29 out of 30 points for their paso doble and 27 out of 30 points for their freestyle performance.

All three couples also performed their favorite eighth-season routine during last night's live finale -- with their scores contributing to their final combined judges score total but not being voted on by home viewers who had already voted based on Monday night's performances.

However all three couples received perfect 30 scores from the judges for last night's performances, giving them a negligible affect on the competition's ultimate outcome.

In addition to Johnson's victory, Dancing with the Stars' eighth-season finale also revealed that Anna Demidova had won the season's professional dancer competition which featured six dancers competing for a spot as a new professional dancer on Dancing with the Stars' ninth season which will air this fall.

'Dancing with the Stars' Shawn Johnson: We thought Gilles had it
By Christopher Rocchio, 05/20/2009

Olympic gold medalist Shawn Johnson and her partner Mark Ballas claim they were surprised to win Dancing with the Stars eighth season over Sex and the City actor Gilles Marini and his partner Cheryl Burke.

"We hoped it'd be our names, but we kind of thought Gilles had it. But we've come a long way and worked really hard," said Johnson during a Wednesday morning appearance on Live with Regis and Kelly.

Johnson and Ballas were crowned Dancing with the Stars' eighth-season ballroom champions during last night's live finale results show on ABC. Marini and Burke finished just behind Johnson and Ballas in second place, while jilted The Bachelor winner Melissa Rycroft and her partner Tony Dovolani finished third.

"It was a tight fight. All three finalists were amazing and the performances handed in were great. I think it could have gone either way," said Ballas on Live with Regis and Kelly. "Shawn and I are just really grateful to the fans for voting for us and keeping us in this long. Being in the finals is an honor itself."

Johnson -- who at 17 years old, also became Dancing with the Stars youngest champion -- is the third Olympic athlete to win the ABC ballroom dancing competition.

However she said her skills as a gymnast didn't really help her in the ballroom.

"I would say [it was] a disadvantage, just because I've had 16 years of gymnastics experience and habits behind me," she explained. "They hurt the dancing side of it."

Ballas -- who previously won Dancing with the Stars' Spring 2008 edition with Olympic gold medalist figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi -- agreed with Johnson.

"I think in gymnastics, they're trained to be so focused and stern," he said. "In dancing, you've got to bring out that personality. So I kind of broken every gymnastic rule there is."

Now that her Dancing with the Stars journey has come to an end, Johnson said she plans to "take a break."

"I haven't been on vacation in eight years. I'd love to go on a cruise or something," she said. "But getting back into the gym... That's where I am right now."

Despite being unable to escape the gym, Johnson said she's unsure if she'll compete in the 2012 Summer Olympics.

"Don't know yet," she said. "We're going to see if that's what I still enjoy doing. It's just about having fun."

As for Ballas' future, he said his band the Ballas Hough Band -- which also includes Dancing with the Stars professional Derek Hough -- will be touring this summer.

In addition, he also contradicted a recent claim by Hough that the duo "might not be back" as Dancing with the Stars' professionals for the show's upcoming ninth season due to other obligations, such as their music.

"We're going to be touring this summer. We're actually kicking it off next week at the Indy 500. We have a big show there," said Ballas. "We're going to be touring, playing music all summer. Then hopefully Season 9 if they ask me back."
