Wrightsville Doctor Recalls Time on 'Survivor' Author: Evan Pinsonnault • January 30, 2009 • 3:36 pm
Dr. Marcus Lehman knows how to be a "Survivor."
Both on the hit CBS television reality show of the same name, and in the challenging field of preventative medicine.
The Jacksonville, Florida native, who now works in Wrightsville, at the Johnson County Center for Community Health as a general practitioner, made it through 25 of 39 show weeks on "Survivor," and four-plus years of medical school at Emory University in Atlanta.
"Believe it or not, both experiences have a lot in common," said Lehman. "I had to get know a lot of different people in a tough environment, and get the best out of them. Hunger was never an issue at med school though, or fending off gorillas."
This month, he accepted a temporary post as a general practitioner filling in for a Wrightsville doctor on maternity leave.
At 29, Lehman says he's got a lot to look forward to in his medical career, including going back to school to become an anesthesiologist this summer. But he says recalling memories of "Survivor: Gabon" can sometimes be the best medicine to take his mind off work.
"Yeah, I had one experience where I won a challenge and... got to fly in a helicopter overlooking the African landscape. We landed on the side of a cliff by the ocean where we ate a real dinner," he said. "No bugs or leaves, real food. It's one of the top five moments of my life."
But for all the food, fun and fame that "Survivor" has given him, he says, getting the chance to help people in Johnson County ranks as another top moment.
"It's incredible to be a part of this community and to have the chance to show people what they need to do to be healthier and lead a better life," said Lehman. "I came out of the show wanting to do some work in family medicine and general health before going back to med school for anesthesia, and I guess you could say like 'Survivor' I got lucky and found an opportunity here in Wrightsville."
Lehman says while his time in Central Georgia will be short, it's just as rewarding as getting to travel to another part of the world.
"It's certainly way more bustling than Gabon was," he said while laughing. "But I spent time growing up in small towns and small communities and I just love doing regular-people stuff. I'm a regular person who's had some amazing opportunities and experiences, and I'm looking forward to what comes next."

I think I'm feeling sick and need to call a doctor! lol. Wrightsville, GA is only about 150 miles from me! If you go to the article, you'll see a photo of the sign of the Johnson County Center where he is working and it has the phone number on it. Hey Dmom, I guess it's my turn to do some stalking, lol. Let's all call and make appointments with Dr. Lehman, lol. BTW, the area code for that area is 478, lol. _________________

Purple, I think it'd be easier if you flew/drove down here being I'm only 150 miles from where he is, lol. But yeah, your bum knee is a great excuse to go see him. Since I'm over 40, I could probably use a prostate exam, LOL _________________
