Eliminated "American Idol" contestant Lilly Scott has some frank things to say about her surprising elimination and not getting to be as indie on the show as she would've liked.
On her elimination:
I definitely have no regrets, but watching certain people make the Top 12 who had not done so well on the past three weeks and then going off the judges' comments on my three songs the past three weeks, I was frustrated. My fan base wasn't there even though the producers and judges seemed to love me and I felt like I was having a great run on the show.
Then again, my voting demographic probably doesn't even own a TV and if they do, they're out riding their bike or doing something more productive than watching TV, let alone "American Idol." I guess they just weren't voting ... I definitely think I got cut early. I knew I could've done really well next week on the Rolling Stones. Maybe I was just too off-the-wall for people or maybe it was my time to go out with a bang and keep my indie cred ... but the people I thought who were going to go home were completely different than the people who went home.
On her Patsy Cline song choice:
I picked that song because I love Patsy Cline, but then again, the "American Idol" voting demographic is mostly tweens and I'm sure they don't know who Patsy Cline is. That probably affected me but I'm staying true to my song choice.
Which artists she'd love to collaborate with and where she fits in in the music world:
Thom Yorke from Radiohead and Bjork. They're the king and queen of the Indie world. They're who I strive to be like as an artist. I definitely think I would fit in in the big summer festival circuit, Coachella and Bonaroo. I could have a whole different type of audience coming out to shows.
On what she really wanted to sing:
The producers swayed me against doing [songs I wanted to do] because they were by people even less well known than Sam Cooke or Patsy Cline. I did try to do "Nude" by Radiohead, which is their top-charting song but that didn't get cleared. I just figured I love classic rock and I was going to try to make that my niche this season because unfortunately indie and underground music isn't ready for the big breakthrough and that was reaffirmed by me getting voted off.
Final thoughts:
"American Idol" has been a great experience and I really appreciate meeting everyone. It has been a wonderful stepping stone to everything awesome that I'm going to do with my career.
